This is why I prefer to do things myself

This thread examines when it is or isn’t appropriate to tip.

First, some WTF observations:

The landlord!?

My doctor!?

The hotel maid!?

A seamstress!?

This is one of the reasons I’m not fond of this country.  How about paying people a decent wage in the first place?

It’s funny, but tipping actually embarrasses me, especially if tipping doesn’t seem obvious or necessary.  I feel like some richy rich looking down on the little people by throwing money at them.  It figures that tipping is so prominent in the U.S.  There’s also the additional problem of people no longer carrying cash so often.  Many a time I’ve had to pass on giving a tip because I had no cash at all.

I guess this is a result of the service economy, but I can’t help but predict a backlash.  A 10-25 percent surcharge on all services can’t last forever.
